Steel Cathedrals (repost)

Visto che sembra essere scomparso dal luogo dove lo avevo linkato, ri-posto Steel Cathedrals, un breve film del 1985 di David Sylvian e Yasayuki Yamaguchi (e la voce di Jean Cocteau).

Le scene sono state girate in due giorni del Novembre 1984 vagando per zona industriale di Tokyo. La musica è stata aggiunta da Sylvian con l’apporto di altri musicisti. La formazione:
David Sylvian : keyboards, tapes, digital percussion
Steve Jansen : percussion
Ryuichi Sakamoto : piano, strings
Kenny Wheeler : flugelhorn
Robert Fripp : guitar, frippertronics
Holger Czukay : dictaphone
Masami Tsuchiya : guitar ‘abstruct’

Il video venne pubblicato su VHS in edizione limitata a 2000 copie e poi ristampato nel 1989. Anche la musica uscì dapprima solo su cassetta in un numero limitato di copie nel 1985, per approdare poco tempo dopo al CD, con qualche traccia in più.

Kapsis è frutto di una collaborazione fra Edgar Barroso, giovane compositore messicano e Yen-Ting Cho, designer di Taiwan.

Kapsis is a piece for flute, electro-acoustic music, and video art. It portrays the mesmerizing Nahua myth of a young girl who becomes a starfish. The animation will be part of a contemporary opera, which is a collaboration between composer Edgar Barroso, designer Yen-Ting Cho, and filmmaker Aryo Danusiri.

Canti delle balene in tempo reale

whalesong.net è un interessante sito la cui “mission” è quella di promuovere la conservazione e la tutela dell’ambiente sottomarino.

In questa ottica, hanno sviluppato il progetto WhaleSong destinato a diffondere in tempo reale, via internet, le voci delle balene e di altri mammiferi marini mediante il sistema schematizzato nella figura qui sotto.

Si tratta, sostanzialmente, di un microfono sottomarino (idrofono) collegato ad un trasmettitore che invia i segnali raccolti dall’idrofono a un ricevitore piazzato sulla costa. Da cui i segnali vengono instradati nella rete grazie ad un server audio e possono essere ascoltati grazie ad una internet radio raggiungibile dal sito di cui sopra o direttamente da questo link.

Fisicamente, il tutto è piazzato sull’isola di Maui, nelle Hawaii, uno dei più importanti siti di whale-watching del globo.

È disponibile anche una applicazione per iPhone (OS 4.0 and above).

Naturalmente non sempre è possibile contare sulla presenza di vari mammiferi marini nel sito in quanto questi animali compiono lunghe migrazioni. In questo caso la radio trasmette le registrazioni dell’anno precedente.

Dall’8 all’11 Dicembre, Lione è un buon posto dove andare. Per quattro notti vi si svolge la Fête des Lumières, manifestazione, ormai giunta alla 12ma edizione, in cui vari artisti della luce proiettano le loro creazioni sui monumenti della città. Per quattro notti, Lione ruba a Parigi il titolo di Ville Lumière.

Sconsigliato ai demofobi: sono attesi circa 3 milioni di visitatori.

Bella l’idea delle gocce di inchiostro nell’acqua in questo lavoro di danio catanuto e trovo anche l’abbinamento con la musica discreto e raffinato.

L’autore:

Growth is a vision both of reality and life/growth/death. Ink drops in water are arborescences, inflorescences. Phantasmogorical images which any of us can interpret estetically on basis on one’s own uncounscious, revealing a sometimes dramatic or sometimes symbolic aestethic.
It represents the organicity and behaviour of every form of life that borns, growths and deads in its ambient, among other individuals. Some external umpredictable elements can generate, determinate and modify the course of events.
Music, here, is the scene’s sound, artificially organic, that describes and emotionally interprets the entire narrating form.
The soundscape elements represent three main aspects: the environment ambient (water), the forms’ organic developement (treated piano samples) and the presence of unpredictables and isolated events.
The whole formal aspect comes from the physics of ink drop’s expanding course.

Un altro video di Jon Weinel su cui, stavolta, abbiamo qualche informazione

This is my latest audio-visual work, a collage of different material created in Maya, Jitter, After Effects, Flash etc. It Uses hand-drawn animation as source material. The basic concept is to explore the idea of entoptic phenomena (spiral dot patterns experienced in altered states of consciousness), through the audio visual medium.

David Toop (born 5th May 1949, Enfield, London, England) is a musician, writer and sound curator. He has published three books, currently translated into six languages: Rap Attack (now in its third edition), Ocean of Sound, and Exotica (selected as a winner of the 21st annual American Books Awards for 2000).

His first album, New and Rediscovered Musical Instruments, was released on Brian Eno’s Obscure label in 1975; since 1995 he has released six solo albums - Screen Ceremonies, Pink Noir, Spirit World, Museum of Fruit, Hot Pants Idol and 37th Floor At Sunset: Music For Mondophrenetic - and curated six acclaimed CD compilations for Virgin Records - Ocean of Sound, Crooning On Venus, Sugar & Poison, Booming On Pluto, Isolationism and Guitars On Mars. In 1998 he composed the soundtrack for Acqua Matrix, the outdoor spectacular that closed every night of Lisbon Expo ‘98 from May until September.

He has recorded shamanistic ceremonies in Amazonas, appeared on Top Of The Pops with The Flying Lizards, worked with musicians including Brian Eno, John Zorn, Prince Far I, Jon Hassell, Derek Bailey, Talvin Singh, Evan Parker, Max Eastley, Scanner, Ivor Cutler, Haruomi Hosono, Jin Hi Kim and Bill Laswell, and collaborated with artists from many other disciplines, including theatre director/actor Steven Berkoff, Japanese Butoh dancer Mitsutaka Ishii, sound poet Bob Cobbing visual artist John Latham, filmmaker Jae-eun Choi and author Jeff Noon.

As a critic and columnist he has written for many publications, including The Wire, The Face, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Arena, Vogue, Spin, GQ, Bookforum, Urb, Black Book, The New York Times and The Village Voice. He has curated Sonic Boom, the UK’s largest ever exhibition of sound art, displayed at the Hayward Gallery, London, from April to June, 2000. In 2001-02 he was sound curator for Radical Fashion, an exhibition of work by designers including Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe, Martin Margiela and Hussein Chalayan, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2001-2002 and featuring music by Björk, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Akira Rabelais, Paul Schütze and others.

Recreating the Philips Pavilion

Prof. Vincenzo Lombardo, from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Turin, and his team have done an extraordinary job of unearthing the secrets of the legendary Philips Pavilion.

In 1958, Philips Industries commissioned Le Corbusier to build their pavilion for the World’s Fair to be a showcase of their technology. Iannis Xenakis was working for Le Corbusier at the time and ended up designing the building as well as writing music for some of the spaces (Concret P.H.).

Le Corbusier designed the visuals for the inside and chose Edgar Varèse to create the music for the main space. It was an extremely complex installation with 350 speakers, all sorts of lights, slide and film projectors, sculpture and more. Xenakis’ music and architecture was heavily based on mathematics, especially hyperbolic paraboloid shapes.

Edgar Varèse worked in Philips new sound studio in Eindhoven with two full-time technicians to create the main musical piece. Le Corbusier worked with his firm to create the visuals.

Now, the virtual recreation by Prof. Lombardo and his team give new life to this legendary space. His site it’s well worth a (long) visit enjoying all the materials archived online.
