Boing Boing Video proudly debuts a new piece from the “great god almighty could it get any more awesome?” N.A.S.A. music project, this one from two personal music heroes: Tom Waits, and Kool Keith. The track is called Spacious Thoughts, and you can pick it up on the project’s debut album, Spirit of Apollo.
NASA, short for “North America South America,” is a music collaboration project assembled by Squeak E. Clean (aka Sam Spiegel, brother of film director Spike Jonze) and DJ Zegon (Ze Gonzales, professional skateboarder).
The music video was created by Montreal-based Fluorescent Hill and can be downloaded here. More on “the making of”, and interview with artists here.

A proud band. Of course I don’t appreciate this kind of arrangement, but this guys are really honest. They don’t bother with false or cerebral pronouncements. They play hard. Cool!

Il chitarrista Les Paul (il cui vero nome era Lester William Polsfuss), inventore della chitarra solid-body e curatore della linea di strumenti Gibson che porta il suo nome, si è spento ieri a White Plains (NY) alla veneranda età di 94 anni.
Questa lunga e bella commemorazione del NY Times ne rievoca la carriera, raccontando anche alcuni gustosi aneddoti, fra cui quello, ormai abusato, secondo il quale il suo insegnante di pianoforte scrisse alla madre “Your boy, Lester, will never learn music” (sembra che una storia di questo tipo ormai sia comunissima, fra i musicisti e non solo ed è quasi obbligatoria per coloro che avrebbero poi portato un grande cambiamento nel proprio settore, da John Cage ad Einstein).
In una intervista del 1991, con una certa dose di umiltà, ebbe a dire “The only reason I invented these things was because I didn’t have them and neither did anyone else. I had no choice, really.”

Effettivamente, la grandezza di Lou Reed sta nella capacità di cantare sempre la stessa canzone. Saranno 40 anni che Lou scrive brani su due accordi, tipicamente tonica e dominante, qualche volta un’altra combinazione, e ci canta sopra nello stesso modo, a volte con le stesse parole.

Doveva succedere prima o poi. I Beatles sono finiti in un videogame. Realizzato da MTV Games, sarà rilasciato in settembre. Alla conferenza di presentazione si sono riuniti tutti i detentori dei diritti: Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon e Olivia Harrison. Cosa non può il denaro…
Paul (”We love the game”) e Ringo (”The game is good”), hanno detto poco. Le vedove, ancora meno. Sono state anche rese note 10 delle 45 canzoni incluse nel gioco fra le quali “I Saw Her Standing There,” “Day Tripper,” “Taxman,” “Here Comes the Sun” e “Get Back.”
La notizia è apparsa dapprima sull’Ansa, ma io ho trovato anche la schermata e il trailer .

Attivi dalla fine degli anni ‘60, i Residents continuano la loro straordinaria avventura restando sempre nell’anonimato.
Pur avendo pubblicato circa 60 (!) album, realizzato vari video, 3 DVD ed essersi esibiti centinaia di volte in pubblico, i componenti del gruppo hanno sempre avuto il volto coperto da maschere grottesche (la più celebre delle quali è quella di un gigantesco bulbo oculare), non mostrando mai quindi il loro vero volto al pubblico. Per tale motivo è possibile che nel corso degli anni si siano avvicendati numerosi musicisti nelle vesti dei quattro componenti della formazione. I Residents si sono sempre autoesclusi dai grandi circuiti di musica commerciale, mescolando rock, elettronica, noise, vaudeville e sperimentazione, producendosi inoltre in numerose reinterpretazioni dissacranti di brani classici del repertorio della musica pop.
L’ultima loro produzione è l’Icky Flix Live DVD, che uscirà l’8 Aprile:
The Icky Flix DVD is a documentary shot entirely from an audience perspective. The DVD runs in real time from the start of the show to the end with nothing edited out. There is no post production on the sound or the picture. The event was captured on six consumer level DV cameras. The sound comes from one of the cameras.
