Phantom Channel is a new netlabel devoted to non-commercial, uncompromising ambient music. The first release is a very interesting compilation with 9 tracks by different artists. The music is minimalist but emotional.

Phantom Channel è una nuova etichetta dedicata all’ambient non commerciale e privo di compromessi. In teoria non dovrebbe ospitare quelle musichette idiote e sedative comunemente spacciate per ambient e in effetti la loro prima uscita mantiene le promesse.

Si tratta di una compilation di nove brani e altrettanti artisti scaricabile qui.

Krypton is a solo project of Krzysztof Berg from Szczecin in Poland (born in 1986). He’s been fascinated in sounds since 1999, when he recorded his first track on of most popular music software in that times.

It’s hard to consider krypton’s music – mostly it’s electronic music with enormous variety of deep & atmo sounds. Most often krypton experiments with many different sounds simultaneously, that’s why many people consider his music little “strange”. For a while now, he’s been more focused on the silent & dark melodies, structure and arrangement of his songs. His music is for all people but not for everyone.

Personalmente, questa musica eterea mi piace e la ascolto volentieri, ma da un po’ ho dei dubbi sull’artisticità della faccenda. Con i sistemi attuali, mettere in piedi pezzi del genere è maledettamente semplice e non particolarmente innovativo.

Non che la semplicità in sé sia un problema. Anche comporre come Cage era semplice, ma all’epoca aveva un suo senso. Anche i loop del primo Eno erano semplici, ma erano una novità.

D’altra parte, Krypton è piuttosto raffinato, per cui lo segnalo. Chi vivrà vedrà…

is a collection of 6 compositions, each of which is based around a simple melodic fragment. These fragments are then altered by various processes (i.e. adding notes, transposing, shifting the beat placement). The compositions end when the process has run its course

Il risultato è un tranquillo ambient, con evidenti reminiscenze di un vecchio Eno, ma non è male e la progettualità compositiva applicata a del materiale di estrazione praticamente pop gli vale una citazione.

Bella e quieta questa Vladivostock, del belga Bernard Zwijzen, aka Sonmi451, tratta dal suo “The Quiet EP” (appunto), quattro tracce che mescolano ambient e a modo suo, melodia.

It’s a delight to welcome Belgian artist Bernard Zwijzen, aka Sonmi451, a veteran of release of real-life labels such as U-Cover, to Monotonik with his rather divine 4-track release, ‘The Quiet EP’, which artfully blends ambience and melody in some delightfully beguiling ways.
This EP, includes both tracks from Sonmi451’s super-limited edition U-Cover CDR ‘Vladivostok’, as well as new material.

The Sonic Map of Battersea Park is a Web based piece of audio art, created in search for new and innovative ways of using audio on the Web. It integrates the technology of Flash and a notion of soundscape navigable in a Web browser. It aims to transport an Internet user to the London park to experience its complexity, cosmopolitanism, vibrancy and sense of enjoyment, using sound clips and minimal graphics. It also challenges the user to explore new ways of navigating a web space, by using a sense of hearing instead of vision.

Molto bella questa mappa sonora di Battersea Park (Londra). Bella perché di solito nella mappe sonore ci si limita a collegare delle registrazioni a dei punti su una mappa geografica per dare all’ascoltatore un’idea realistica dell’ambiente.

Qui, invece, non c’è alcun ambiente realisticamente ricostruito, se non sotto l’aspetto sonoro. Si sente quello che accade, ma non lo si vede. L’ascoltatore si muove in un ambiente buio da cui emerge una moltitudine di eventi sonori che suggeriscono l’atmosfera di un parco. Ma non si vede mai nulla e così l’ascoltatore è invitato a costruirsi un paesaggio mentale orientando il microfono verso le sorgenti sonore e camminando attraverso il parco.
Bello anche l’effetto stereo.

L’idea è analoga alla Dark Room realizzata dal sottoscritto, con l’aiuto di Lemi, per Verona Risuona 2006. Anche là una stanza buia in cui spuntavano suoni dal nulla, con gli ascoltatori invitati a “farsi il proprio film”.

Attenzione: quando la mappa si avvia, la prima cosa da fare è cliccare con il mouse nella finestra nera, perché a volte l’oggetto non si attiva da solo e bisogna farlo anche ogni volta che si rientra dopo avere eventualmente cambiato finestra.
I punti bianchi, fermi o in movimento, sono sorgenti sonore. Per muovere il cerchio rosso, che è il microfono, si usano le frecce, non il mouse. Le frecce sin/des (←→) orientano il microfono sul cerchio, mentre quelle alto/basso (↑↓) lo fanno avanzare nella direzione in cui è orientato (un po’ come guidare l’auto).

Program notes excerpt:

Nest is the collaborative project of Otto Totland and Huw Roberts. The two started working together after forging a strong friendship as former members of the Miasmah label. This self-titled EP is their first work publicly released.
Both pianists, there is little wonder that after exploring a plethora of musical styles, the two find themselves most at home writing traditionally structured pieces, with the ivories a major element throughout. The EP demonstrates clearly the innate ability the two have for song writing, borrowing from the world of film soundtracks and contemporary classical composers to craft delicate instrumental compositions.
Alongside their favoured instrument can be variously heard the plucked strings of the Welsh harp, violins, woodwind instruments, field recordings, percussion and a heady dose of mind wobbling effects.

Russian sound artist Polina Voronova creates shimmering tapestries that walk the fine line between pretty and mystical. Minimal and drone oriented, her compositions are often delicate and full are bell-like tones; a city of chimes and tuning forks.

Nakjaarna is the ambient musical project of Kris Tilbury, who hails from the border regions between the USA states of Texas, Arkansas and Louisana. Her work hails in spirit from the forbidden arctic places of the mind, where thought, idea, and barest hint all fuse together in a caravan of snow. She uses commonplace instruments such as a dulcimer, a voice and light percussion, processed into drone, to create ice palaces on permafrost. Her work is minimal dark ambient, rendered with the vigor of an ecological hot spot. She has previously appeared on a compilation on the wonderful intelligentmachinery.net netlabel, and writes for the webzine www.deepintense.com.

Rain is a series of conceptual CDs produced under the auspices of Webbed Hand Records. Each Rain is a CD-length ambient recording ideal for listening to while relaxing, working, or socializing. Typically the recordings in this series are minimalistic soundscapes, with motifs played out cyclically and repetitively, rather than progressively, in order to induce a relaxed state.

The Webbed Hand “Rain” series in now graced by a contribution from Djinnestan. Much like the shorter works, this 74-minute piece is subtle and enchanted. As if in a dream you find yourself strolling in a fairytale forest, dark and misty, peopled by the figments of childhood imaginings. This album is ideal for meditation, trancework, and quiet activities. It is recommended that you play it at low volume, as it is meant to be listened to peripherally, not directly.

Rain è una serie di CD collegati a uno stesso concetto prodotti sotto gli auspici della netlabel Webbed Hand Records. Ogni CD è un brano ambient pensato per il relax, il lavoro o la socializzazione. Tipicamente le registrazioni che fanno parte di questa serie sono paesaggi minimalisti, con motivi eseguiti ciclicamente e ripetutamente, più che progressivamente, in modo da indurre uno stato di relax.
