3D printed flute

Amit Zoran of the MIT Media Lab has created a flute with a 3D printer starting from a CAD model.

For now, the sound is unreliable due to the materials used, and the model still has some small imperfections, but it's a significant step forward that could lead to major developments both commercially (lower prices, at least for mid- and low-end instruments) and experimentally, which interests me more. Here, we glimpse the possibility of designing and testing new instruments or new shapes for traditional ones. It will also be possible to create customized instruments.

For electroacoustic use, sound is not an essential quality, being transformed and created via software, and therefore the possibility of experimenting with new shapes and sounds is attractive.
