Ans Meer

You've surely noticed that the last few posts are dedicated to Japan. A brief overview of contemporary Japanese music is a way to connect with this country, where I've been and loved, and its people.

Toshio Hosokawa is one of the most interesting contemporary Japanese composers. Born in 1955 in Hiroshima, he studied in Germany, which gave his music a distinctly European sound. At the same time, he hasn't forgotten his country's traditions, as demonstrated by his pieces derived from Gagaku, which we've already discussed.

Here we listen to Ans Meer from 1999, a concerto for piano and orchestra, which belongs to the more "Western" side of his output.
