Cloches d’adieu, et un sourire

Also in the year of Olivier Messiaen's centenary, this time we have a tribute from Tristan Murail to one of his masters.

"Cloches d'adieu, et un sourire" (Farewell bells, and a smile) in memoriam Olivier Messiaen," written in 1992, the year of Messiaen's death, is a short piece for solo piano that evokes the sixth of Messiaen's Eight Preludes, "Cloches d'angoisse et larmes d'adieu." Murail's piece is linked to Messiaen's through rhythmic and intervallic quotations, punctuated by various breaks in tempo.
