logo The European Union is creating a vast digital backup of European civilization in the form of an online encyclopedia called Europeana. The project aims to digitize all the continent's national libraries, museums, and archives and will contain books, photos, maps, paintings, audio, and film, all accessible without a subscription.

The project, which began in July 2007, will be open to the public, in prototype form, on November 20th with the content already acquired: 2,000,000 digital objects from materials already digitized by museums, libraries, archives, and audiovisual collections from various nations. The goal is to reach 6,000,000 objects by 2010.
