The First Website

If, out of curiosity, you want to take a look at the first website ever created click here.

Nothing too flashy. It's a series of text-only pages that, however, showcase something that today, more than 30 years later, is commonplace, but was a major innovation at the time: hyperlinks.

On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau of CERN put this site online, describing the foundations of the WWW project, which was actually created to allow high-energy physicists to share data, news, and documentation.

The site was accessible at http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html.

What you see online today is a snapshot of the site taken on November 3, 1992.
