Forgotten Pearls

coverThere's nothing like tidying up a house that contains, among other things, several thousand records (CDs and vinyl) scattered around various pieces of furniture, to find things you forgot you had. Russian clocks, old photos where you can't quite figure out who's in them, and even a few records you haven't listened to in ages.

So, by chance, I stumble upon a record by Julie Driscoll, a highly successful vocalist with Brian Auger & The Trinity in the roaring '60s, then married Tippett (Keith) and converted to improvised music and experimental jazz in a solo career much darker than before under the name Julie Tippetts (with an added 's').

A darkness from which, however, every now and then emerge little gems like this Sunset Glow, which dates back to '74, on the border between jazz, Wyatt-esque songs (it's not impossible that he is the R to whom the song I'm presenting you is dedicated) and a bit of experimentalism. The other musicians on the album are Brian Godding, guitars; il marito Keith Tippett, piano, harmonium; Mark Charig, cornet, tenor horn; il compianto Elton Dean, alto saxophone; Nick Evans, trombone; Brian Belshaw, bass; Harry Miller, bass; Louis Moholo, drums.
