With new hard drives capable of hundreds of GB, the traditional file manager is facing a crisis. It's increasingly difficult to find anything in an endless list of directories and subdirectories.
If you consider that new 4 Terabyte hard drives are being announced for 2011, you understand that the issue is about to get serious.
The image you see is a map of my hard drive created by this mapping program. Squares and rectangles are files whose type is highlighted in color. For example, blue rectangles are audio files, yellow are images, red is a video, etc. The size of the blob reflects the size of the file.
Hovering over it with the mouse displays the file name and, of course, you can zoom in. The next step is to implement a series of file actions, and you'll have a new kind of file manager.
The way we view computers is changing.
