The Sonification Handbook (AA.VV., edited by Thomas Hermann, Andy Hunt, John G. Neuhoff) is available for free (and legally) download in PDF format from this page (see the right column for "download the book"), where it is also available for purchase in print. Individual chapters are also available for download.
This book is an introductory yet comprehensive overview of key research areas in the interdisciplinary fields of sonification and auditory display. The chapters are written by experts and cover a wide range of key topics. They can be read from cover to cover, or independently of each other as needed (like a buffet menu).
Sonification conveys information using non-vocal sounds. Listening to data in the form of sound or noise can be a surprisingly novel experience with diverse applications ranging from new interfaces for the blind to data analysis in many scientific fields.
This text provides a solid introduction to the field of auditory display, sonification techniques, suitable technologies for developing sonification algorithms, and the most promising areas of application. The book is accompanied by an online archive of sound examples.
