Biologists studying dynamic ecosystems swamp a section of land with microphones to obtain an audio map of the environment.
This process is based on the ideas of bioacoustic pioneer Bernie Krause, who coined the term "biophony" and the acoustic niche hypothesis, according to which the audio spectrum of each ecosystem is finely divided among the species that inhabit it (with the obvious exception of humans, who brutally occupy all the bands).
This produces sonograms like the one on the right (click to enlarge), which are then analyzed to identify the species that inhabit the ecosystem.
