Greg Sandow (art historian) publishes this data that identify with a certain precision the moment when the concept of classical music has developed:
Between 1815 and 1825, in the concerts promoted by one of the main musical organizations of Vienna, 77% of the music was of living composers and only 18% of dead composers (the remaining 5% was of composers unknown to us, of which we ignore the biography).
In 1849 the percentage was almost exactly reversed.
