What happened to the piano player?

Watching this excerpt from the Concert for Toy Piano and Orchestra (2005) by Matthew McConnell, brilliantly performed by Keith Kirchoff, it seems as if a spell has struck pianist and piano.

The toy piano, on the other hand, is an instrument with a specific repertoire (among others, Cage, who is, by the way, not the only one).

New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. Sergio Monterisi, conductor. Recorded in NEC Jordan Hall
