Voyage

This image photographs an installation created by Aether & Hemera (architect Claudio Benghi and lighting artist Gloria Ronchi) at Canary Wharf (London).

The boats you see are not made of paper, but of polypropylene, a non-toxic and recyclable material. They are connected to each other via an underwater electrical cable with weights that hold them in place. Each boat is equipped with a color-changing LED, individually addressable and programmable, meaning the entire fleet acts like a light matrix that can be configured to create lighting effects, geometric patterns, and moving waves of color.

The boats are connected to form a wireless network that allows passersby to interact with the fleet via cell phone, changing colors and patterns.
