whalesong.net is an interesting website whose mission is to promote the conservation and protection of the underwater environment.
With this in mind, they have developed the WhaleSong project, designed to broadcast the voices of whales and other marine mammals in real time via the internet using the system shown in the image below.
It is essentially an underwater microphone (hydrophone) connected to a transmitter that sends the signals collected by the hydrophone to a receiver placed on the coast. From there, the signals are routed online via an audio server and can be listened to via an internet radio station accessible from the above-mentioned site or directly from this link.
Physically, the whole thing is located on the island of Maui, Hawaii, one of the most important whale-watching sites in the world.
Of course, it's not always possible to count on the presence of various marine mammals at the site, as these animals undertake long migrations. In this case, the radio broadcasts recordings from the previous year.
