La mente dei polacchi

Ma cosa c’è nella mente dei polacchi?
Quella che vedete qui è una sorprendente galleria di manifesti cinematografici polacchi dal 1950 alla fine degli anni ‘80.
Sono bellissimi, ma sono anche tremendamente dark, gotici e a tratti decisamente macabri. Guardate, come esempio, quello di Vertigo (in Italia: la donna che visse due volte) del 1958 (in Polonia nel 1963) che è un thriller di Hitchcock, ma non così macabro e confrontatelo con l’originale e quello italiano.
Ora, è vero che a volte il manifesto di un film è un’opera d’arte, ma è anche vero che si tratta di un veicolo pubblicitario che dovrebbe attirare la gente e invogliarla ad andare al cinema…
Per questo mi chiedo “cosa c’è nella mente dei polacchi?”

Quest.Room.Project

Un altro interessante gruppo russo.

A gentle flute motive introduces us to the world of Quest.Room.Project from Russia, and one might at first expect a relaxed listening experience. But by the time more voices chime in, it becomes obvious that these spotlights are going to be swallowed by shadows of tragic compassion. “Room Number: Fiducial Banality” is organised in 4 parts (one could as well define them as movements, because there are some key themes occuring throughout the entire release) and each of them features a room with distinct acoustic characteristics:
“The reason for surfacing” appears like a shadow of a doubt that gradually turns into overwhelming certainty. Almost inaudible at the beginning, “Assemblage” soon escalates to several emotional outbursts, before exhaustion will take its tribute in “Possession” and create a haunted, threatening atmosphere. As reminiscence of the beginning, “Combined Exercises” begins with a flute solo and continues to pick up previous motives to escalate them to a wall of sound. Finally the dissonances wither away and make room for the last remnants of the ever occuring flute theme. A cycle has been completed and we are at the beginning again…
Bogdan Dullsky, the creative head behind the Quest.Room.Project, describes his intentions as “a search of space for the life leaving for borders of habitual linearity”. But “Room Number: Fiducial Banality” doesn’t attempt to descibe a solution to break free: It’s left up to the listeners themselves to recognise their personal ever returning patterns of life and change them by their own strategy. or - as Bogdan concludes - as an “attempt to live by some own rules on which borders it is possible to breathe freely”.

Kronos Quartet & Tom Waits

In September 2003, Kronos teamed up with Tom Waits for a concert at Lincoln Center in New York to benefit the humanitarian organization Healing the Divide, and a live recording of the performance was released on July 10th.
Other performers that night included Philip Glass, Anoushka Shankar, and Foday Musa Suso.

Now we can listen to Kronos and Waits, with bassist Greg Cohen, performing Diamond In Your Mind on Myspace

MIDI Controllers

Controller Zone è una interessante pagina che raccoglie link ai produttori di una serie di superfici di controllo MIDI, cioè quegli oggetti che permettono di inviare dati MIDI tramite faders, potenziometri e bottoni, oppure con sistemi un po’ meno usuali come un theremin MIDI o un sistema che genera dati a partire dalle onde cerebrali.

Wild Horses

Nel dormiveglia del mattino che tira verso mezzogiorno sento la radiosveglia annunciare che oggi è il compleanno di Mick Jagger.
L’anno di nascita non lo dicono, ma io mi ricordo che era poco prima della fine della guerra. No, io ancora non c’ero, ma quando avevo 12/13 anni sapevo tutto del Rolling Stones e quasi tutto me lo ricordo ancora.
Il passato remoto è chiaro, fisso, immutabile ed eterno; il passato prossimo è nebuloso. Il che può essere un sintomo di alzheimer incipiente oppure un segno che il primo è ormai diventato storia.
Un rapido controllo conferma che Jagger è nato nel ‘43, quindi anche lui oggi raggiunge la fatidica soglia celebrata dai Beatles in when I’m 64 (a proposito, certe volte mi chiedo se la canzone sfiga per eccellenza non sia questa, piuttosto che “lunga e diritta correva la strada…”. Molte volte ho avuto la sensazione di aver dribblato la morte, mentre solo una volta ho creduto di poter dribblare il tempo e l’ho pagata cara…).
Comunque Mick Jagger ha 64 anni e ancora corre sul palco. Per celebrare vi metto due video con la stessa canzone: il primo è il tempo che passa; il secondo è un live del 1976 in cui il nostro tira fuori tutto il suo accento downtown. Theory and Techniques of Electronic Music, il libro a cui Miller Puckette ha lavorato per anni è finalmente terminato e disponibile gratuitamente sia online che in pdf su questo sito. Chi preferisce la versione stampata può acquistarla da World Scientific Press.
Miller Puckette è noto per essere l’ideatore di software come Max/MSP e PureData (in pratica, Max/MSP su linux) ed è una delle migliori menti attualmente in circolazione per quanto riguarda l’audio digitale.
Il libro è vivamente consigliato agli studenti come testo tecnico di studio. Astenersi perditempo.

Zen Savauge fa una specie di psychedelic dub avvolgendo l’ascoltatore con ritmi lenti, suoni riverberati e scratch da vinile. Di questo album, Inconnu, dice:

Inconnu, which stands for “unknown” in french, is conceptually based around the idea of finding and exploiting the unknown beauty in the chaos of nature. One major interpretive theme is that of the microscopic, macroscopic, and melancholic world in which we are connected to holistically. That idea was expressed through the use of random molecule-esque sounds bits layered underneath turbulent, looming dubbed-out melodies flowing about a motion of beat (which in my mind reflects the animation of life). The overall emotion of the tracks as a whole is that of a stark, beautiful, melancholy which is how i subjectively view the state of world.
These ideas and concepts as well as most all the track titles were derived from my reading the book “Chaos” written by author James Gleick.
